Historic Queen Street, the main street of Port Perry, with all its picturesque shops and boutiques, is within three kilometres of Canterbury Common. Port Perry has an excellent hospital (Lakeridge Health Port Perry) which is part of the Lakeridge Health system and which is used as a base for rural medicine teaching.

Hospital

Also located in the town are a comprehensive medical clinic, several dental and vision practices, six churches, three large grocery stores, liquor and beer stores, four banks, a variety of restaurants, a community arena with meeting rooms and two rinks, curling and lawn bowling clubs, an outdoor swimming pool, marina, parks, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, a fair ground which accommodates the annual agricultural fair, one of the better equipped and stocked libraries in the Region with excellent internet resources, a local ‘little’ theatre, several choral groups, and a very active seniors’ centre which supplements our own activities. Also nearby are a winery, artists’ studios, boat cruises on Lake Scugog, the Great Blue Heron Casino and year round lake activities including fishing, boating and snowmobiling.

While Port Perry is surrounded by farmland and has access to the Trent-Severn Waterway it is still part of the Greater Toronto Area. GO service to Toronto, via bus and rail links, is available. Good roads and public transit links mean that the cultural heart of the big city is available, as are the benefits of the major hospitals. Pearson International Airport is within reasonable reach. More than that, however, the trip to cottage country, be it Muskoka, The Kawarthas or Haliburton, is about an hour and a half away – without fighting city traffic. The University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Trent University, Durham College and Sir Sandford Fleming College are less than a forty-five minute drive from Canterbury Common.

It is all within easy reach – museums, galleries, vacation destinations, the arts, educational opportunities, medical care, the lake, country fairs, farm fresh produce and an active social life. One never needs to leave the area!

In Port Perry there is an active seniors’ centre, the Latcham Centre, which organizes activities such as a computer club and line dancing. Associated with our Port Perry Hospital are a cardiac exercise programme and many other health related support groups. Add to this several guilds, musical and theatre groups, various churches, charitable and environmental organizations, sports and fitness groups and there is no time for boredom!
